Post-Op
Instructions
Undergoing multiple tooth extractions is a significant dental procedure that requires proper care and attention to ensure a smooth and comfortable recovery. Please review the following post-extraction care instructions carefully and follow them closely to promote healing and minimize complications
Bleeding
It is normal to experience some bleeding after multiple extractions. To control bleeding, gently bite down on clean gauze pads placed over each extraction site for about 30 minutes. Replace the gauze pads as needed until bleeding subsides. Avoid rinsing or spitting forcefully, as this can dislodge blood clots and prolong bleeding.
Pain Management
You may experience discomfort or soreness after the anesthesia wears off. Take any prescribed pain medications as directed by your oral surgeon. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can also help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation. Avoid aspirin, as it can increase bleeding.
Swelling
Swelling is common after multiple extractions and typically peaks within 48 hours. Apply an ice pack or cold compress to the cheeks or jawline for 20 minutes on, then 20 minutes off, to help reduce swelling and discomfort. Be sure to keep your head elevated while resting to further minimize swelling.
Diet
Stick to a soft or liquid diet for the first few days following surgery to avoid irritating the extraction sites. Choose nutritious foods such as soups, smoothies, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and scrambled eggs. Avoid hot, spicy, or hard foods that may cause irritation or discomfort.
Medications
Take any prescribed medications as directed by your oral surgeon, including antibiotics if prescribed. If you experience nausea or vomiting after taking medication, contact your oral surgeon for further instructions.
Oral Hygiene
Maintain good oral hygiene to prevent infection and promote healing. Gently brush your teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush, being careful to avoid the extraction sites. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt dissolved in a cup of water) several times a day to keep the area clean and promote healing.
Follow Up Appointment
Attend your scheduled follow-up appointment with your oral surgeon to monitor your healing progress and ensure proper recovery. If you experience persistent bleeding, severe pain, swelling, or other concerning symptoms, contact our office immediately for further evaluation.
Rest and Activity
Rest as much as possible for the first few days following surgery to aid in the healing process. Avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and bending over, as these activities can increase swelling and discomfort. Take it easy and allow your body time to recover.
